India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has taken a major step in his recovery from a sports hernia surgery, batting in the nets for the first time since the operation.
The surgery was carried out on June 25 in Munich, Germany, and marked the start of a long recovery process. On Friday, Suryakumar shared a video on social media. In the video, he was seen training in the gym and then focused on his return to batting. "Can’t wait to be back doing what I love," he captioned the video he shared on Instagram.
Suryakumar Yadav had already been training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) for the past few days, focusing on fitness drills and strength work. However, this was his first batting session since the surgery. He is expected to get fit in time for the Asia Cup 2025 scheduled in the UAE from September 9 in the T20 format.

Focus on Match Fitness Before Asia Cup 2025
Suryakumar has increased his workload from light exercises to gym sessions. He has now resume his batting practice. The video showed him playing a range of shots comfortably that suggested his batting rhythm is returning.
With the Asia Cup less than a month away, the team management will be keeping a close watch on his progress. If there are no setbacks, he is expected to lead India in the continental cup.

Suryakumar scored 717 runs in 16 matches at an average of 65.18 and a strike-rate of 167.92 for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). He underwent surgery for a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen after the season finished. The issue had been troubling him for some time and the decision was made to get it addressed immediately after the IPL season.
Post-surgery, the 34-year-old took a short break and was spotted at the Wimbledon in London before resuming his rehab work in Bengaluru. Since then, he has been undergoing regular fitness assessments at the BCCI CoE.
