Mitchell Santner Salutes Jasprit Bumrah as Mumbai Indians Storm into IPL 2025 Playoffs

Mumbai Indians (MI) secured their place in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) playoffs with a dominating 59-run win over Delhi Capitals (DC), driven by exceptional displays from Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Santner with the ball, and Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir with the bat.

Suryakumar (73* runs off 43 balls) and Dhir (24* runs off 8 balls) wreaked havoc in the slog overs, pushing MI to a formidable total of 180 runs, which proved to be above par on the challenging surface. The duo smashed 48 runs in the final two overs of the innings.

In the second innings, MI’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah was impressive as usual, stifling the opposition’s scoring in critical phases. He also bagged three wickets, including a crucial one of Tristan Stubbs. Complementing Bumrah’s brilliance, Mitchell Santner’s crafty spin bowling kept the batters guessing as he also claimed three important scalps in the form of Sameer Rizvi, Vipraj Nigam and Ashutosh Sharma.

Mitchell Santner Praises Jasprit Bumrah’s Brilliance After DC Win

Reflecting on the match, MI’s all-rounder Santner praised the team’s collective effort, particularly highlighting the impact of pace spearhead Bumrah.

"We have shown that in the last few games, the guys up top trying to swing the ball and it's always nice to have someone like Bumrah to bowl at the back end of the powerplay and obviously at the end," Santner said as quoted after MI’s win over DC.

Santner also credited Suryakumar and Dhir for setting a competitive total on a difficult surface.

"As a unit, we were great with the ball. But it was set up by SKY and Naman to get us to 180, which was probably over par on that wicket," he added.

Commenting on his own role, the 33-year-old left-arm spinner explained how he adapted to the pitch conditions and finished with a four-over spell of 3-11.

"It was nice. Slightly slower wicket with the red soil. The more overspin you bowl, the more you get out of it. Today, that was my job, mix it up and keep the batters guessing. It was nice to see it spin. I bowl stump-to-stump, obviously, there was a little bit there which was nice, so you could essentially bowl a bit straighter," Santner concluded.

Mumbai Indians’ Path to Top-Two Finish After IPL 2025 Playoff Qualification

With MI currently on 16 points after 13 matches, their final league game against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 26 is crucial to secure a top-two finish in the IPL 2025 points table. To reach 18 points, MI must win this match. Their Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.292 is the highest among playoff teams.

However, they also need favourable results elsewhere, hoping that at least two teams out of of Punjab Kings (17 points), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (17 points), and Gujarat Titans (18 points) do not surpass them.
